Indianapolis Parks Install Free Outdoor Gyms Across 15 Locations
Equipment installed along trails and in green spaces gives residents no-cost options for strength and cardio sessions this summer.
How we reported this
Indianapolis Parks and Recreation added or upgraded free fitness circuits at five sites this year, including pull-up stations, resistance bands setups and bodyweight zones that require no membership fees.
Summer heat and longer daylight hours have pushed more residents outdoors for exercise, especially as indoor gym costs climb above $40 a month for many households in Marion County. Local trails already see heavy use from runners and cyclists, and the addition of strength equipment lets people combine cardio and resistance work in one stop without driving across town.
Garfield Park and Broad Ripple Park circuits
Garfield Park on Southern Avenue features a 12-station loop installed near the conservatory entrance, with dip bars, leg press platforms and balance beams that opened for public use in spring 2024. A few miles north, Broad Ripple Park along the Monon Trail added four new pull-up and push-up stations last fall that sit between the playground and the dog park, drawing morning crowds before 8 a.m. on weekdays. Both locations sit within a short walk or bike ride from nearby neighborhoods and connect directly to paved paths for warm-up laps.
Usage data and maintenance details
Indy Parks logged 18,400 visits to the outdoor fitness sites during June 2025, according to department records released last month. The Parks Foundation covers equipment checks every six weeks, and all stations remain open from sunrise to 11 p.m. daily with no reservations required.
Residents can download the free Indy Parks map app for exact pin locations or stop by the Garfield Park visitor center on weekday mornings to pick up a printed circuit guide. Checking the posted maintenance tags before each workout helps confirm stations are ready for use.
